Oral history can be used to research social history, cultural history, political history, military history, community history, and economic/business history. Some familiar examples include the film documentaries of Ken Burns (such as Jazz and Baseball), Stephen Ambrose's books (such as D-Day and Band of Brothers), books on local history (such as Ed Okonowicz's Disappearing Delmarva) and numerous exhibitions at museums across the country. In 2003, a 10-year oral history project called StoryCorps began with a goal of recording 250,000 interviews throughout the United States. 1st State Stories: Recollections of Delaware Past shows individuals and organizations how to conduct interviews themselves and helps them to use oral history collections in Delaware. Suggestions for projects and their presentation are included here for aspiring documentarians, along with a guide for proper planning to make your project a success! |
